Home goods giant IKEA has issued a recall for its METALLISK Espresso Maker following reports that a stainless steel safety valve is bursting and expelling hot contents.

According to the recall notice by the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission along with partnering agencies in Canada and Mexico, 16 reports of the valve bursting have been reported worldwide, with reported injuries including burns, scalding and hearing damage.

The METALLISK Espresso Maker was offered as a vertically oriented, stainless steel stovetop coffee brewer that functions similarly to a traditional moka pot, resulting in a strong, low-volume brew.

Recalled products were sold in IKEA stores and online between September 2020 through January 2022 for approximately $20.

Recalled products can be identified through the IKEA logo at the underside of the brewer’s base and a date stamp between 2040 and 2204, with the first two numbers representing the year of manufacture and the second two numbers representing the week of the year.

The products were manufactured in China. Approximately 7,500 of the brewers were sold to customers in North America.

IKEA is urging consumers to immediately discontinue use of the recalled products and return the brewers to stores for a full refund, with no receipt required.

See the recall notice for all the information.
